Traditional copper-tube coils and modern all-aluminum coils each trade off differently on heat transfer, repairability, corrosion, and cost. Here's how to think about it.
Most residential coils are built one of two ways: copper tubes with aluminum fins (the traditional design), or all-aluminum construction, including modern microchannel coils (see the next article). Each has real advantages, and the "better" choice depends more on what you're optimizing for than on either being simply superior.

Wherever copper and aluminum are joined directly, galvanic corrosion is a real physical phenomenon — two dissimilar metals in contact, in the presence of moisture, will corrode at different rates and can accelerate degradation at the junction. Manufacturers have dealt with this for decades through soldered/mechanical joint designs, coatings, and quality control, and modern coil manufacturing has made this a fairly minor practical concern for a well-made coil — but it isn't zero, especially on cheaper coils or in harsh environments (coastal salt air, industrial pollutants). Copper tube itself is also separately susceptible to formicary corrosion, a slow pinhole-leak process linked to certain airborne organic compounds (some cleaning products and building materials off-gas the compounds that cause it) — manageable with normal maintenance, but worth knowing exists.
Neither material choice alone should make or break a quote. A copper-tube coil that fails is often more repairable than an all-aluminum one, which matters if you'd rather fix a small leak than replace a whole coil — but copper's rising cost is part of why more manufacturers are shifting toward aluminum, including in premium product lines. If a quote specifies the coil material, that's a sign of a detailed, transparent scope; if it doesn't, it's a fair question to ask, especially for a coastal or otherwise corrosion-prone property.
