Who's behind HVAC Referee

We didn't learn this industry from a spec sheet. We spent two decades inside it — on the install side, in distribution, and working with the manufacturers whose equipment ends up on your quote.

20+ years, every level of the supply chain

The team behind HVAC Referee has spent more than 20 years working across the entire HVAC industry — starting on the install side with contractors, then moving upstream into distribution, and further upstream still into work with the major equipment manufacturers (OEMs) whose model numbers show up on quotes every day.

That full-stack view is unusual, and it's the whole reason this service exists. Most people evaluating a quote have only ever seen one layer of it — a homeowner sees none of it, and even a lot of "get a second opinion" services only ever worked one side of the business. Understanding what a job actually requires on the install side, what equipment and parts genuinely cost in distribution, and how that equipment is engineered and priced at the manufacturer level — all three, together — is what lets us look at a quote and tell you which parts are legitimate and which parts are just padding.

We've lived through the industry's biggest shifts — not read about them after the fact

Every few years, this industry goes through a transition that reshapes what equipment costs, what's legal to install, and what a contractor can genuinely blame on "the new regulation." We've been on the inside for all of the recent ones:

  • The R-22 to R-410A phase-out — the original refrigerant transition, and the template every refrigerant change since has followed, including how contractors talk about it on a quote.
  • The furnace efficiency rule fight — the years of back-and-forth over the 95% AFUE requirement, including what's actually settled and what's still being litigated. See our furnace efficiency rule breakdown.
  • The SEER2 rating change — a real shift in how efficiency is tested and rated, not just a cosmetic number bump. See our SEER ratings explainer.
  • The current GWP step-down — R-410A being phased down under the AIM Act in favor of R-454B and R-32. See our R-32 vs. R-454B comparison and AIM Act pricing breakdown.

Having actually lived through each of these transitions — not just read about them afterward — is what lets us tell you which part of a price increase is real and which part is riding along on a genuine transition because nobody's going to ask questions. That's the judgment call at the center of every report we write.

Independence is the actual product

We've spent real time on the side of the businesses that sell and install this equipment — which is exactly why we don't do that here. HVAC Referee doesn't sell equipment, doesn't install anything, and doesn't take referral or placement fees from any contractor, distributor, or manufacturer. You pay us directly for the review, and that's the only way we make money on it.

Curious how that experience actually turns into the report you get back? See our Methodology page for exactly what happens to every quote we review.
